Slow Week

There hasn’t been much to post about the past few days. We did manage to avoid the rain for the balance of the week. Most days were sunny with warm temperatures. Sally really enjoyed spending time soaking it up, along with her best friend.

My brother and I were able to make quite a bit of progress on the house we’re building. We got it all framed up, along with all the truss’s up and in place by Thursday afternoon. Pretty good for one old guy, and one a few years younger. The last two years we had people stop by and ask if we could hire them for a few days or weeks. Not so this year. They have either found jobs, or don’t want one.

I just looked at the weather forecast. Chance of rain for most of the week ahead. Warmer temperatures have the hardwood trees beginning to bud out. The blooms are also starting to show on the pines, and within a week I’m sure we will see the beginnings of the yellow fog. At the least, if it rains, it will wash away most of the pine pollen. If it doesn’t, everything outdoors will be sporting a coating of yellow for days.

Anyway, just two more weeks and we’re on the road, again. Can’t wait to get rolling. There are folks to visit with that we haven’t seen in almost a year. Looking forward to seeing them again, as well as some friends we haven’t even met, yet………jc

More of the Same, Part 2 or 3 or?

Here it is, Saturday morning, and our third rain storm of the week. There has been close to six inches of rain so far, for the week. Another 2-5 inches possible with this storm. I really wish all of this was falling in Texas and Oklahoma, where it is needed. Every lake, pond, swamp, whatever, is full to overflowing in our part of the World.

Sally doesn’t like it, either. Over the past couple of years she has become frightened of thunder. At the first distant roll, she begins to pace. As it gets nearer, she’ll get on one lap or the other, then jump down and reverse the process. If it gets really bad, she goes to the master bath and lays on the floor. At the least, she has followed the instructions of all the talking weather heads. She takes cover in a small, windowless room.

For the last two years we have considered doing the Southwest Desert area during the months of January and February. I think all this rain has convinced me that we will be making that journey next Winter.

Otherwise, not a lot of going on around home. Was able to get in one day of house building for the week. Friends just purchased a new travel trailer which we hoped to check out today, but think we’ll wait for better weather. Looking forward to some great traveling adventures with them.

I hear more thunder. The satellite TV just went out. Sally’s headed for the bathroom. Think I’ll just take another nap.......jc

It’s Gone!!

One of the best BBQ joints in the country went up in smoke early this past Sunday morning. Appropriately named, it was more a shed than anything. A couple of rooms constructed of plywood, pallets, and rough boards; held together with tin, tarpaper, and vinyl sheeting. It was the kind of place where you couldn’t find a parking place nearby unless you came in the mid afternoon.

The total interior was covered with one of everything imaginable. There were thousands of dollars hanging from the ceiling and walls with all kinds of notes written on them.

The owners say they will build back better than before but I don’t think they can. They may cook the same BBQ, but there isn’t any way they can recreate to original building. Just happy to say we were able to enjoy the old place before it was gone. We will always remember our lunch with Judy there just a few weeks ago.

Hopefully, we will get an opportunity to try out the new Shed before the end of the year.

A little drive South

As the temperature hovered in the forties with a 20 MPH wind blowing from the North, Saturday wasn’t the best day to spend much time outside. Wanda had gone to town early to help with the Upward Basketball league, and I was just hanging around the house, when a good friend called. He asked if we would like to ride down to N’awlins with him and his wife for lunch, and also a little shopping. As Wanda was scheduled to finish at 10, we agreed to leave town around 11.

It was a beautiful day, other than the cold. I forgot to take a camera of any kind. Took a few shots with my phone.

We soon arrived in downtown New Orleans.

Notice the guard rails? We had forgotten that it was getting close to Mardi Gras weekend. We soon found ourselves in bumper to bumper traffic along a parade route.

Folks just beginning to come outside on the balconies and setting up along the street. This wasn’t anywhere near the French Quarter, but more uptown.

We eventually made our way to a parking garage and the restaurant where we had lunch. A really nice place called Luke. A little fancy for an old country boy, but I managed to find something to eat. They had a part of the kitchen behind glass so you could see the chef’s working on the meals.

Was able to get a shot of an appetizer, but didn’t manage to take time out for pictures when the main course’s arrived. Too busy with shrimp’n grits, po’boys, breakfast plates, and a platter of hand made sausage links, to dig out a camera.

After a fine meal, we made a couple other stops before leaving town. At the Lakeside Mall, there was a display of some of the amazing costumes crafted by the Zulu krewe of Mardi Gras. From what I understand, these costumes are all handmade by the members of the krewe. Fascinating, to say the least.

From there it was an hour’s drive back home. It had been a great day trip. Sometimes, it’s more fun to just “get up and go”; rather than spending time planning a trip…….jc

Winters Back (with a vengeance)

All those pretty flowers I took pictures of Monday are now putting on their jackets. I don’t think it’s going to do them much good, though. The forecast low for tomorrow night is 21 degrees. That will be the coldest night we have had all Winter.

There hasn’t been much exciting to report on around here this week. My brother and I worked on our house building project Tuesday and Wednesday. Roughed in plumbing on Tuesday and laid steel and wire in the forms on Wednesday. Tough work for an old man. We had the concrete poured yesterday and everything went well. Ready to start on walls as soon as the rain stops again.

Speaking of rain, it woke me up around 3 this morning and has been falling all day. After breakfast with friends in town, the balance of the day was spent doing a couple of honey-dos and surfing the net. Caught up on blog reading, and ordered a couple of parts for the trailer. Looked all around the Country for some sunshine, but pretty much came up empty handed. The only sunshine I found was in Canyonlands and Yosemite.

That’s about all the news for now. Everyone stay warm the next few days……..jc

Spring is Popping out all Over

What’s that bright light in the pines? Haven’t see anything like it for days.

With the sunshine today, the first since last Monday, things are beginning to pop around the house. First noticed the Jasmine blooming in a tree by the shop.

Also on the fence around the yard.

The azalea's are just beginning to put on a show out in the woodlot.

Lots of blue and yellow blooms scattered around also.

Finished the installation of the new glass on the Casita door. Really like the way it turned out. Hope it continues to look good. First time I’ve tried anything like that.

Hopefully, we will have a few days without rain. Doing carpentry work the next few days. Got to get that project done before June, or the brother will be working by himself…jc

Rain, Rain, Rain!!!

Though I know many parts of the country are way behind on their share of rainfall. Southwest Mississippi has to be above average. We were gone from home approximately 3 weeks and three different storms left behind over 7 inch’s.

We we awakened Wednesday morning around 3 AM to another pouring rain. Over three and a half inch’s again yesterday. The forecast is for more tonight, tomorrow, and Saturday. The only positive is that we are sitting in our home rather than an RV.

Otherwise, not a lot happening. Purchased a new grill (Cobb) to possibly take along on our travels rather than the small kettle grill. Got a deal on Woot. $59.99 + $5.00 shipping. It cooks a little different than the regular grill, but I think we’re going to like it. Did a couple of Salmon filet’s on it tonight and they turned out fine.

I did accomplish a couple of things , today. Wanda has wanted a stained glass window for the Casita door for a while. Well, that wasn’t going to happen, but we did find some nice window film in Florida last week. Removed the door glass and installed the film today. Looks really good. Almost like the real thing. Will post a picture when the weather improves.

Hoping to stay dry; and looking forward to sunshine…………..jc

Home Again

After our tour of the crane refuge on Saturday, we made our way to Madisonville, LA and Fairview-Riverside State Park. This is one our favorite campgrounds near home. Easy access and close to lots of restaurants and shopping areas.

We called up some close friends that lived in the area and they came out to visit for a while. Brought a truckload of firewood with them for us to burn Saturday night. We decided to go out together for an early dinner, then return to the CG for a fire.

Had five pounds of boiled crawfish for supper. First of the season. They were kind of small, but still delicious. Had to order an additional pound for dessert.

The weather was perfect for a fire. Just enough chill in the air to make a it fun to sit around and visit.

They said their goodbyes around 9 PM and we were in bed by 10. Hooked up early Sunday morning and hit the local Café De Monde for coffee and beignets.

From there it was a short stop at Academy Sports as Wanda wanted some new walking shoes. I perused the kayak section while she shopped. Really want to get myself one of those.

Home around noon and trailer unloaded and parked by 2PM.

Monday found me Working on the new house my brother and I are constructing. Third one in three years. Got to do something in the Winter, right?

Mississippi Sandhill Crane NWF

The sun was just beginning to peek in and around the pines of Mississippi Sandhill Crane NWF near Gautier, MS on Saturday morning.

A light fog shadowed the lower elevations as we got ready for our refuge tour. As Judy went about the business of getting a vehicle for us, we wandered around the visitor center. A very nice place to learn a lot of things about the birds and their plight. Beautiful diorama’s and lots of displays.

But nothing beats having a great personal guide. Talk about someone with the gifts to do a job and the willingness to do it joyfully. Judy loves her work, and it shows. And talk about “eyes like an eagle”! She has them. She constantly was the first to see everything. Hawk, here; Coot, there; See that Harrier?
It wasn’t long before we found our first pair. We took a number of pictures, but it was only after reading Judy’s post that I realized we were watching the unique Crossbill.

We drove up on a group of juvenile's, which took wing immediately.

Overall, we saw 19 of the 130, or so, Mississippi Sandhill Cranes on the face of the Earth. Pretty good percentage. It is hard to comprehend that these are all there are. In the 1970’s, only around 30 still lived. It’s great to see the numbers slowly increasing.

We also saw this active Bald Eagle nest. Mom, or Pop, was watching over things from a nearby tree.

We had a fantastic time. All the information on the refuge and the birds themselves was really eye opening. It was made all the more better by Judy.

If you have the opportunity to visit the refuge, do it. And, if you have the opportunity to visit any refuge Judy and Emma are volunteering at, you are in for a special treat…….jc

A Visit over BBQ

Made it back into Mississippi Today. Snagged a spot in Davis Bayou campground. Part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore and a place to use the geezer card. 8 bucks for water and electric, paved backin sites with some nice scenery around. Pretty good deal.

Our main reason for stopping by again on the way home was to meet Judy again. The famous Judy who travels with Emma.

We met for just a short time back in the Fall as she was traveling Through MS toward Texas. As we knew she was presently volunteering near Ocean Springs, we made contact to arrange a visit. We met for lunch at the famous Shed BBQ. A really unusual place that has been on many food shows on TV.

Someone even left a bill in Emma’s honor.

We had a wonderful lunch with Judy as she shared many of her adventures. We look forward to spending more time with her tomorrow as we take a tour of the refuge with her.

The scenery here in the campground is pretty nice. A few hiking trails around marsh and woodland.

Sally stumbled upon a whole (flock, gaggle, murder, herd??) of squirrels. They spooked her as much as she did them.

Travel Day

After saying goodbye to new friends, we departed Cedar Key yesterday around 9. Traveled all day through sun and rain. Made it all the way to Spanish Fort, AL. Spent the night in AL state park just north of the interstate. Nice for an overnight, but never quiet from traffic noise as it it sandwiched between I-10 and Hwy 90. Moving on East today for a date with another new friend.

In Search of Mermaids

The story goes something like this. Some sailors of old, after being on a small sailing ship for months, saw a beautiful sea creature resembling a shapely lady and named them mermaids. Probably, after a few months on a ship everything resembled a woman. More facts seem to support that they were seeing manatees.
We left the rv park around Nine AM, headed South toward Crystal River. We had a map from the park that took us to a river crossing where sightings were probable. It was a good map. They were everywhere, traveling up and down the channel between springs and the bay.

Looking up the canal, there were canoe’rs, kayaker’s, crab boats, tour boats, everything.

The manatee’s didn’t seem to mind. They just gracefully swam along looking as if they didn’t have a care in the world.

I don’t think the kayaker even knew one was near.

They were constantly going up and down the channel. Shadowy shapes breaking the surface every now and then for a breath.

There was a research team from U of F there capturing, analyzing, and tagging them. They had a spotter on the bridge and as they spotted one headed back out to the bay they would attempt a capture. Here they have one near shore and are putting out the net.

They slowly pull the net in with the manatee.

Before long, you can see it nearing shore.

The research leader, a young lady that looked way too young to be a college professor, was acting as the spotter on the bridge. She shared lots of information about the animals. She said they keep the manatee out of the water for about an hour. They measure, weigh, and tag each one. Their closest relative is the elephant, and they are primarily vegetarians. There are approximately 5000 in the Florida waters and their biggest enemy is the power boat.
We moved on and did a little shopping after leaving the bridge, then headed back to the trailer. As we arrived back at the park, the local guy was sunbathing.

Later this afternoon as I was walking Sally down the road near the rv park, I noticed a bee tree.

A hive of wild honey bees have moved into this hollow tree. These used to be common in our part of the country, but no more. Whatever pest that is decimating the bee population has been working overtime around home. Can’t remember the last time I saw a honey bee in the garden.
I only had my pocket camera, and thinking they may possibly have some killer bee genetics, I didn’t get very close. As the temps were in the eighties today, they were working overtime.

Manatees and bees, a good day. And running into the researchers made it even better.

Catching up is Hard to Do

Hopefully, we can get back on track with days and dates with todays blog. Brenda and Ro arrived Saturday afternoon and we have been seeing and doing some “stuff”. First thing Sunday morning found us at Shell Mound. An archeological site which could also be called a dump. Located at the edge of an estuary, it is a mound of shells. Oyster, clam, mollusk, and others, along with animal bones and broken tools that were discarded beginning 6000 years ago. It once had a footprint of over five acres and reached a height of twenty eight feet. Just imagine how many shells it took to create a mound that large. Much it was hauled away years ago to be used as fill material and roadbeds before its true value was appreciated.

Now covered with a thin layer of soil, it has huge trees of many kinds, as well as all the understory plants growing on it.

Just to stand there on the mound, looking out at the marsh flats and imagining the generations of people that it took to discard all those shells in one location, is mind boggling. What did they look like, how was their lives, why here, etc? So many questions.

There are two hiking trails at the mound, so we had to do both. One was on the mound itself, and the other was around and through the marsh.

The crabs were everywhere, moving like armies upon the battlefield.

Another trip we took found us in the Suwannee wildlife refuge. The only wildlife we say other than birds was one shy coyote. If you look hard, you can see him behind the bush.

We spent a little time enjoying the quiet of the river,

and had a fine lunch at a small, out of the way, café. Thanks, Janna for mentioning it.

We had a fun two days with great friends. Monday found the girls shopping and Ro and I riding some backroads. Last evening was covered in yesterdays post. We went back into town this morning and had breakfast together before they headed out.

Since their departure, we have just been hanging out in the rv park. Wanda did laundry and I cleaned up the trailer. Got to do those things, even if on the road. Did a little reading and a lot of loafing. We went back into town tonight for a light supper and another sunset.

Tomorrow, we plan to head South on a day trip to see some manatee’s, hopefully…….jc

A Fantastic Few Days

What a great few days it has been. When we arrived there was already one Casita in the Park where we are staying. A couple of days later, friends from home caught up to us and snagged the site right next door. We had our own little “Egg” corner of the park. James and Brenda are on their maiden voyage in their Casita. Last word I heard was they are going to keep it.

But, lets back the story up a bit. As I was setting up the trailer when we arrived, I happened to look back toward the clubhouse and saw washers and dryers on the back porch. Wait a minute, where did I hear about that? I thought for a minute and then it hit me. Tin TeePee/Log Cabin! Mike and Janna. I read her blog.

A quick glance around the park. That’s got to be them. Really nice looking coach, Montana plates, yellow jeep; it has to be them. Wanda confirmed it the next day when she ran into Janna while in the clubhouse.

Since that time, we have had a few short visits in the campground. Tonight, they joined the four of us for dinner in town. We had a fantastic visit together. A great time of conversation; learning a little about each others lives as we talked of traveling, kids, grandkids, friends, etc. It was like we had known each other for years as we talked about other blogs and bloggers. I’m so glad we had the opportunity to meet them. Two great folks, and Emmi, Too.

We all drove into town a little early to try and snag a few sunset shots. Got one or two that weren’t too bad.

Cedar Key

We arrived near the small town of Cedar Key, FL late Thursday afternoon. Found a really great RV park about six miles from town and got all settled in. Most folks in the park are here for the winter and they made us feel very welcome. So welcome in fact, that though we originally checked in for two days, we went back and extended our stay for a week.
Friday morning found us in Cedar Key. A small seaside village with one main street of modern shopping. Thank goodness for that.

Plenty of places to eat. I actually think there were more restaurants than retail shops.

There was something for everyone. A kind of eclectic atmosphere.

A block back from the water are many examples of the old town architecture.

A little art of many different kinds is scattered around.

These guys were hanging around everywhere.

I think they know. Though Cedar Key is a nice little seaside village, and tourism is very important to the area, the basis of their economy is still the same as it has been for years. It comes from the waters of the area.

Dwarf Forest

A few miles North of the town of Carrabelle, FL exist one of natures many quirks. A forest of dwarf cypress trees exist in what’s known as Tate’s Hell. The trees are the same as other local cypress genetically, and trees grown from their seeds reach normal size when planted elsewhere.

Many of the trees are over 300 years old, but may be no more than six feet tall.

The trees cover an area of approximately 20 acres, totally surrounded by pine forest.

There are many theories as to what caused the trees to grow as they did, but no definite answers. Poor soil, or a shallow level of bedrock could be a factor. Whatever caused it, it was worth seeing. Just another example of the things you can find driving the back roads.

More Apalachicola Area

As we were enjoying our lunch on Wednesday, the nice lady serving us asked if we had stopped at the Estuary Aquarium. Not quite the correct name, but close enough. It was located at the foot of the bridge to St. George Island.

A practically new facility, it was a fun stop for an hour or so and the price was right; FREE!

There were three large marine exhibit tanks with examples of fresh water, brackish water, and salt water environments.

There were blue crabs, and horseshoe crabs.

Bones and shells, and jars, and stuff.

As well as some local history of the area.

A very good use of some of our tax dollars. We would recommend it to everyone. Until tomorrow,

Good Day in Apalachicola

Had an awesome thunderstorm roll through the area early Wednesday morning. Lightening and thunder had Sally trying to get in the bed with us. One extremely bright and loud boom came from very near the campground. Though the electricity stayed on we found we had no WIFI of TV signal when we got up around 8AM. We got a slow start on a walk on the beach, and then headed out.

Spent the rest of the day visiting in and around Apalachicola. Wanda did some shopping in a few of the unique shops in the old historic district. Sally and I mostly wandered up and down the old waterfront area. Did see one shop that caught my fancy. Think the name was The Tin Shed, or Shop. Lots of Stuff. Mostly nautical, but lots of other “junk”, too.

There was also a very nice sculpture dedicated to the Vietnam War Veterans.

After all that walking it was time for a late lunch. We had asked about oysters and were told the best were on St. George Island. At a place called Eddie Techer’s Raw Bar. Sounded like my kind of place, so off we went. Had the place to ourselves as it was around 2PM. Wonderful lady, native of England, working the bar. We had an hour or so of wonderful conversation and some mighty fine oysters.

You knew they were fresh, as you could see the oystermen working from their small boats on the bay, as you drove the bridge between the mainland and the island. We had a wonderful day with a couple of other stops, but I’ll get to them later.

The Forgotten Coast (I stand corrected, thanks, folks.)

We decided to depart Fort Pickens yesterday morning. We got away from the CG around 9AM and started driving East on Hwy 98. All the tourist towns wedged between the Military bases and the Gulf of Mexico. Ft. Walton, Destin, Panama City, etc. As it was a Federal holiday, traffic wasn’t too bad but there were plenty of stop lights. East of Panama City things begin to change. Port St. Joe, Apalachicola, and Carrabelle were more to our liking. More like the old Florida. Fishing rigs and oyster boats, along with roads paved in oyster shells.
We stopped for the night at a small RV park just East of Carrabelle. Between the highway and the Gulf. Nothing fancy, but a really neat place. Check out our personal palm tree.

Sally especially likes it as she is allowed to walk along the shore and smell all those fantastic things that don’t exist back at home. There are even beware of bear signs around. The beach, if you can call it that, is narrow but just as much fun as the larger one’s. As we are on some bay that is protected by offshore islands, the water is much calmer.

We made it down and back a couple of times today.

Didn’t do a lot today. Took a ride to check out a nearby state park we may stay at on the way back through. Wanda did a little laundry and for the most part, we just chilled. May move on tomorrow, or stay here another day. Really depends on the weather.
The sunset tonight was interesting. Took a few shots to remember our visit. For those of you that haven’t picked up on it; I like sunsets. I take more sunset pictures than anything else. I just like’em.

Not a good Jelly Fish day.

Up early this morning and out on the bicycle. After a short ride, decided to stop and take a short hike along the bay side of the island. The first thing I saw as I approached the water was all the dead jelly fish. They were everywhere. I assumed they were all jellies, though there were many different sizes and shapes. Also found one starfish among them.

I wonder what caused all of them to apparently die and wash ashore. Is it a natural cycle due to the cold weather, or something more complex such as last years oil spill? Whatever it may be, it was kind of sad to see them washed ashore all along the beach.

We spent a quiet day here on the island. Went for a long hike on the beach near midday, and then just chilled until late afternoon when we drove into Pensacola Beach to have an early dinner. Oysters on the half shell, crab claws, and a seafood platter for the two of us. Life is Good.

As we arrived back at the camp ground there were scattered clouds toward the West. I thought they would help create a fantastic sunset so grabbed the camera and headed for the beach. Though there was some color, it just didn’t come together as I had hoped.

Did catch a couple guys headed in for the evening. Hope they had a good day fishing. If not, wishing them better luck tomorrow.

Think we will be moving on tomorrow(Monday). Not sure when this will post, so the dates may not make a lot of sense. But then again, when you’re retired, dates don’t matter much……..jc

Egg’s Rollin’ Again.

Met friends for coffee Friday morning before hitting the road. It’s been pretty cold the past few days, and we were hoping for a little warmer weather before departing home. Actually, I think we departed on the coldest day of the Winter, so far. We had planned to spend a few days at the Davis Bayou campground near Ocean Springs, MS before moving on East. It is a part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore but doesn’t allow reservations. The entire campground was full, and I don’t think there was a local in the park. It has definitely been discovered by our Northern friends, both American and Canadian. We moved on East a few miles to Shepard state park in Gautier for the night. Had a nice site overlooking the Pascagoula river marshlands.

After getting settled in, we headed out for some BBQ. The Shed, famous for their award winning BBQ, was just a few miles away. We tried a sampler platter for the two of us, and it was FINE. I took some pictures with my phone, but either the phone of the laptop won’t allow me to share them here. All I can say is if you are ever in the Ocean Springs/Gautier area, and you like BBQ, make it a point to visit The Shed. It’s only 1/4 mile North of I-10.

Friends shared a loaf of home made bread with us as a “hitting the road” happy. We put it to good use Saturday morning. Nothing beats hot grilled toast on a cool morning.

After breakfast we had a little powwow and decided to move on to Florida. We are in the Ft. Pickens CG on Santa Rosa Island again. We thought it would be a good stop for a couple of days while the weather warmed up a bit more. Lots of folks here, also; though the two CG’s are only about half full. You can have the walkway to the beach to yourself.

The beach is also empty. Just a few footprints in the sand.

Water is clear and cold. Wouldn’t want to do any swimming right now.

Put some chicken on the grill Saturday afternoon. Enjoyed the sunset through the trees in the campground while it was cooking.

After dinner, we watched the conclusion of the Saints and Forty Niners game. Unbelievable finish. Guess we can say the sun has also set on the Saints for this season. If only they had a defense.

I’m having trouble getting on the internet with my wireless access. Having to do updates from wherever we find wifi. Hope to get it worked out soon. We plan to leave here sometime Monday for points unknown. Will update as we can……….jc

A Look Back In Time

While taking care of the neighbors farm animals last week, I took a little time to really look at the old homestead.. I have been in and around this old house numerous times, but never paid a lot of attention to the details. From looking at the hand hewn piers of heart pine, sitting on sand rock foundations, I would estimate construction was in the early 1900’s.

The original kitchen building was constructed out back so that if there was a fire from the cooking stove, it wouldn’t destroy the house.

The only heat in the main house was provided by this one fireplace.

Electricity showed up at some time, probably in the 1930’s or so.

Followed by Ma Bell and her 8 party line, probably in the 1950’s.

The old smoke house with its wide meat shelf. Can you imagine the sides of bacon stacked on it, while hams and sausage hang from the ceiling. Notice the log foundation.

The old swing is still hanging on the porch, though it has seen better days.

All things considered, the old house is in pretty good shape. It is a testament to the builders of the time. Though it has seen numerous hurricanes and other storms, I don’t think it is in danger of falling down anytime soon. If it could talk, I’m sure it would tell some fantastic tales. A lot of history has been created during its lifetime.
The only resident at present hopes it continues to stand for many years to come….

Hopefully, we are headed toward Florida in a few days. Gonna get down there with all those snowbirds. There’s no telling what we’ll find. Stay tuned……………jc

2011 Gone! They said it would be like this.

Hard to believe that 2011 is already over. Seems like just a few days ago we were ringing in the New Year. The Y2K fiasco seems to have happened just a couple years ago. Like my dad said, “you just wait”!
The year was a good one as far as traveling, though. The past February it was a week in the Texas hill country. March found us in Alabama at what started as a few folks meeting over the St. Patrick's Day weekend and turned into a week long gathering of nearly 40 rigs. The birth of the Green Eggs and Ham Rally. Already over 40 rigs signed up for 2012.
April found us spending a week or so with friends doing the Louisiana Geocache challenge. From there it was back home preparing for our journey Westward. That’s when the blog began, and I’ll not bore you with a repeat of all that.
We had a wonderful, though rainy, Christmas. Rained hard for two days, but we needed it. By Thursday it had warmed up again to short sleeve weather. Had the mower out yesterday doing the final grass cutting of the year. Must be something to that global warming.
The neighbor is out of town for a few days and I have been doing a little farm sitting. The scenery isn’t nearly as good as where Al is doing his, but it’s still fun to take care of the animals, so to speak.

I think farmers were recycling long before it became the popular thing to do.

Another great day in the country. What a way to end the year. Bright sunshine and warm temperatures.

As the year comes to a close, just remembering all the new friends we met around the Country this past year brings joy to our hearts. Hopefully the coming year will be even better. Plan to get a jump start this year. A January trip is in the planning stage.

A Three Book Week!

It has gotten to that time of year. I grew up hearing the phrase, three dog night, in reference to how many dogs it would take to keep you warm on a really cold night. Never heard about a single dog night, or even two. Only three dog nights, as a description of the really cold ones.
These last few days have been what I call a three book week. They come along regularly this time of year. The old library card gets a real workout. Michael Connelly, Lawrence Block, Lee Child, J. A. Jance; and many more become my best friends again. Usually average three a week. When it’s too nasty to spend much time outside and the Casita is still parked under the shed, there’s nothing better than getting into the middle of a murder investigation with Harry Bosch, or helping right a wrong with Jack Reacher.
I don’t do much reading while we are on the road. Too many other things to occupy our minds. A couple of paperbacks can last us a month or more, but I always catch during the Winter months.
We did find time to do another Christmas parade. This one was at night in a nearby town. We still had some flags from the earlier parade and thought we would participate so we could give them all away.

We had some really good help this time. He was shouting Merry Christmas the entire parade.

A really fun time, especially for the four year old!!
Just put a pork butt on the smoker for part of the holiday dinner. By the time it’s done, there should be plenty of side items ready to go along with it.

That leaves plenty of time to just settle back down in the recliner and see if I can help ol’ Harry Bosch with this latest murder.
Wanda and I wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and the best New Year. May you spend the holidays doing what you most enjoy, but please take a moment and remember the real “Reason for the Season”…………………….jc

Armchair Traveler

As great as the Fall season has been, it is apparently over and old man Winter has arrived. The rain arrived early last Monday and hung around till Wednesday. The temps dropped into the twenties for lows and the forties for highs through Friday. Finally warmed up a little on Saturday.

It’s weeks like this when I start getting stir crazy being in the house. I’ll read a book or two, and then start thinking. You know, that thing which always gets me in trouble!

Even though I can’t be in Arizona with Al or Sue, I can get a travel fix of a sort with just a few clicks of the mouse.

There are so many fine webcams scattered throughout our National Parks that you almost get the feeling of being there.

Any part of the country. Great Smoky Mountains to Olympic, Tetons to Big Bend.

All of these except the Teton’s picture were captured in the last couple of days. They all came from park service, national forest, of park associations cameras, with the exception of the Teton pic. It came from the webcam of the American Alpine Club.

This link will give you access to many of the cameras scattered around our parks. Not exactly like being there, but it will do in a pinch.

Since Christmas is only a couple of weeks away, I guess I better quit dreaming and start some shopping. That’s another thing I’m getting pretty good at. Armchair shopping. Isn’t the internet a wonderful thing?…………..jc

Parades and Pancakes

Another beautiful week has come and gone in Southwest Mississippi. It is hard to believe that it is the second week of December and we are still having clear skies and temps near 80. Usually by this time of year we are into the pattern of 1 clear day, 1 cloudy day, and three days of cold rain. I’m sure it is coming, but this has been a fabulous Fall season for us. Many of the hardwoods have yet to turn color and lose their leaves.

Saturday morning was the day for the annual Christmas parade in the small town near where we live. It was also the day for the annual Exchange Club pancake breakfast. We have been doing it for decades, on the same day as the parade. What better way to watch a parade than after a full breakfast.

It is also the day that the Exchange Club participates in the parade by handing out American Flags to all the kids along the route. It is always fun to dress up in a funny, patriotic costume to pass out flags. We try to tie God, Country, and Flag into the parade each year. We hand out two to three thousand small flags along a route of a mile or so.

We load up a small trailer with flags, hook it to a decorated Golf cart, and set out to get in line for the parade.

We all grab a hand full of flags as the parade gets underway. From there, it is nonstop till we get to the end. You can’t stop, having to grab more flags from the cart as the parade moves along. Soon it’s over. It’s all a blur. You have helped give away hundreds of flags to children waiting on Santa Claus and candy.

Hopefully, when they get back to their homes, they will still have that flag. Also, hopefully, one day, they will realize what that flag represents for them, and to their ability to attend Christmas parades and other things in their future.

It was a great day, made even better by more college football. Who would have thought Southern Miss would ruin Houston’s perfect season? And what can I say about those Tigers? Don’t show up for the first half, then defeat Georgia in a walk. Looks like LSU/ALA in the BCS championship. No doubt about it, the SEC will have the National Champion again this year. What a Thanksgiving!

Wow! It is Sunday evening, after Thanksgiving weekend. It has been quite a Holiday. No pictures were taken to record all the events that took place, but the images will remain in our memories forever.

Our friends from Memphis which we balloon with arrived Wednesday pulling their 38’ Sundowner horse trailer. Now you have to understand that this trailer has never see a horse, and has fantastic living quarters in the front two thirds. The horse area is home to all the stuff which makes traveling with two balloons and associated equipment possible.

They attempted to get a reservation at a nearby state park but weren’t successful. As there was no way they could maneuver such a trailer and tow down our driveway, we made arrangements with our good neighbor for them to park near his barn. Even getting it parked there was somewhat of a challenge, but it was accomplished. The balance of Wednesday was spent visiting and enjoying a supper of homemade lasagna.

Thursday found all of us traveling up to my old family stomping grounds, and having Thanksgiving dinner with between twenty or thirty other family and friends. Turkey, dressing, dumplings, ham, etc. You get the picture. Arrived back home around dusk and everyone collapsed into recliners until bedtime, which came real early.

Friday morning we had a small community breakfast at our home. Biscuits, bacon, jams and jellies, butter, molasses, drinks, etc.. That carried us over till the big game, LSU/ARK, kicked off. Then it was snacks during the game, which came out as hoped. GEAUX TIGERS!!!! Friday night found us driving to a nearby town to feast on some great seafood.

Saturday found us taking them to New Orleans for the day. Someone had told them about a small restaurant, Mothers, which was to have the best poboy in Nawlins. Don’t know about that, but they were pretty good. My recommendation is the “debris” poboy with a side of crawfish etouffee. We did a little of the tourist thing with them around Jackson Square and the French Quarter. Arrived back home in time for the EGG BOWL, Ole Miss/Miss State. Another game that came out to our liking.

Today, Sunday, found us all attending church, having a farewell lunch, and getting them on their way home. It had rained all night and there was some concern about getting the trailer out of its spot. Turned out it was easier getting out than in. They were on the road by 1PM.

Wanda and I spent the balance of the afternoon just sitting and napping through a couple of football games. It was a great four days with the best friends anyone could wish for. Now it’s time to try and work off all those calories we have consumed. Will be doing a little carpentry work the next few days, so that should help as long as I ignore those leftovers in the refrigerator.

Fall Fishing Trip

My brother received a call last weekend from a cousin that lives on the Trinity river in East Texas. He said the catfish were still biting, which is rare this time of year. It is usually cold and rainy by the time November gets here. We called up another friend and left Tuesday morning for Liberty, TX. After a quick stop at Walmart to renew our out of state licenses, we hit the river. The Fall colors along the Trinity were fantastic.

We got the lines baited up and headed back to town for the evening. Wednesday morning found us on the river early to see what kind of luck we had. It was still quite cool, but I finally got a smile from the crew.

First one of the day.

Just what we came for.

Some were wanting to get caught so bad, they went to extreme measures to get in the boat. Struck at the bait, missed, and hooked itself in the tail.

After about three hours of hard work, this is what the results were.

A chest full of filets to take home for a family and friends fish fry, and

around four pounds of catfish tenderloins which are about to be cooked up right there on the riverbank. First came the fries, followed by the fish that was swimming in the river a few hours earlier.

You just can’t wait for it all to get done before fixing a plate. Don’t want it to get cold is always a great excuse.

Then it was back on the river to bait the lines for another nights fishing. As you can see, it was hard to stay awake after consuming enough fresh catfish to feed three normal people.

As a cold front had moved through Wednesday, the catch dropped off dramatically Wednesday night. That wasn’t a bad thing. We had plenty of fish to take back home, so we picked up the lines and then headed East. Good Lord willing, we’ll be back on the Trinity next Spring when the fishing is GOOD!

Overall, a great week, though the Casita is still under the shed and the tires are probably getting flat spots. That’s what I tell Wanda, anyway.

Sun sets on another week

Pretty routine week around the home place. Can’t even remember what we did Monday. Tuesday was election day for all out local and state offices, as well as 3 initiatives. Glad it’s all over. The ads on TV and radio, as well as the newspapers, were getting old.

There were a couple of examples of how every vote counts. Our incumbent sheriff only won by a couple hundred votes and a Justice Court Judge seat in a county nearby was won by only 1 vote. I would hate to know that I had intended to vote for the loser, but didn’t make it to the polls for whatever reason.

Received a call from a friend Tuesday night telling me he had found a Casita for sale. He wanted to know if we could go and look at it with him and his wife on Wednesday. We agreed and had a fun day, which ended with him bringing it home. I think he made a pretty good deal. Look out Alaska!

Thursday found me up country helping my brother install storm doors on the houses we built the last two years. Nothing too technical, just lots of parts to assemble in the correct order. We didn’t have to take the first one apart but twice, before reading all the directions and getting it right.

Friday we met friends for coffee and then returned home. It was a bright, sunny day so I thought I would pressure wash the two concrete porch’s and the carport before Winter arrived. Now for the RANT.

I wish whoever invented ethanol had never come up with a use for it. And I wish the politicians that passed the laws which made it a part of our gasoline were all defeated, and that law repealed tomorrow. For those of us that try and maintain homes, and still use mowers, trimmers, blowers, chain saws, etc; the stuff’s a disaster. It destroys small engines. I spent over three hours trying to start my pressure washer. Had to take apart the carburetor three times before getting it started. All kinds of crud in it. Only one and a half years old. Last used 6 months ago. I always use a fuel stabilizer, but it doesn’t help much with the ethanol blends. Needless to say, I didn’t get all the job done.

As far as today, not much happening. Went to a birthday party for some grand nephews this morning and watching football the balance of the day. We’ll see if next week brings more excitement…….jc

Homework, and Fall down South.

One of the first things I had to do after returning home was to cut down some large pines. They were struck by lightning during a July 4th. thunderstorm. The bolt jumped from one to another, actually leaving a streak on 3 different trees. Since that time those three, along with one more which didn’t have any outward signs of the strike, died. They were about twenty feet from our bedroom, so there was no way I could let them fall naturally.

Though we live in the Piney Woods, there are just enough hardwoods scattered around to give us a feeling of Fall. The colors are there, just a vivid as in North Carolina or Tennessee. You just have to look for them.

A walk down our lane in the middle of the day is delightful this time of year.

We’re fortunate to live on a small country road which has very little traffic. Matter of fact, a strange vehicle driving by is going to be the subject of conversation as to who it might be and where they are going.

This is my favorite time of the year. Cool temperatures, blue skies, color in the trees, flowers trying to put on one last show before Jack Frost nips them.

Even the pines attempt to put on a change, but never seem able to pull it off.

Sally also enjoys this time of year. There’s nothing that equals lying in the sun, surveying your kingdom.

Life is Good, and we should be thankful…………………….jc

Home Again!

We arrived back home late Sunday afternoon after approximately 5 of the last six weeks on the road. It was good to see the old homeplace again. Found everything as we left it, which is a concern these days.

Though we have been fortunate to attend the balloon festival in Albuquerque, with over 600 balloons launching and flying within minutes of each other.

And all the special shapes which make you ask: How does it fly, and how many crew does it take?

There's nothing better than getting together with good friends, good weather, a couple of balloons; and just having a good time. From releasing the piball, which tells us the direction and approximate speed of the wind;

To seeing a good friend who has never experienced the feeling of free flight in a wicker basket, going wherever the wind has a mind to take her, hoping her crew will be there in time to help on her return to mother Earth;

It doesn't get any better!

We are thankful to dear friends who allow us to be a part of the fun year after year. By allowing us to share the joy with other friends is beyond measure. To hear someone say that they wrote five pages in their journal, more than they had ever written before, on the experience is just awesome. Hopefully we can help in sharing the fun with others in the future.

Think we’ll go to Arkansas

We have been busy since the last post. Hard to believe it has been a week since the last one. The BIL was able to go home late last Monday evening. After getting him settled, we rethought our plans. There was nothing else we could do in Jackson, so we decided to head for our original destination of the week which was Village Creek State Park, near Wynne, AR.

We get together there each Halloween weekend with ballooning friends and family. We do a lot of eating, visiting, and flying friends and family for 4 days.

We attempt to roast the perfect marshmallow, which can become a mess to eat.

Though we had some rain on Thursday and early Friday, it cleared off in time for the annual bocce ball tournament.

Saturday morning arrived clear and cold. What is that white stuff on the ground?

Things are looking Up

It has been quite a change in our traveling plans the past few days. Arrived in Jackson in the wee hours of Friday and was at hospital by 5:30 AM. Brother in law had already had one surgery and another one was scheduled for later Friday afternoon. Called Lefluers Bluff State park to see if there were any sites available for the weekend and scored one of the last two. Spent the rest of the day between the park and hospital which, luckily, were only a couple of miles apart.

Saturday morning there was a walk for juvenile Diabetes taking place in the park. I had to get Wanda to the hospital early, and back into the park to take care of Sally before 9 as the roads were to be closed. Quite an event with over 4000 walkers. Some ran, some jogged, some were strollered and some rode shoulders. Great event for a worthwhile cause.

Lots of water birds near the campground. These guys spent all day Saturday and Sunday trying to snag a meal along the banks of the lake. Don’t know the varieties, assume they are herons of some kind.

As they were trying for a meal, this guy was eyeing them. He stalked around the edge all day, but I never saw him make a meal of anything. He’s slowly drifting by now as I compose this post.

As of Monday afternoon the Brother in law is making a miraculous recovery from two surgeries. One for a blood clot in the carotid artery, and one for an aneurysm that was discovered while scanning the clot. Just got a text from Wanda that he will go home tomorrow morning, or possibly even this afternoon. Modern science, helped along with the prayers of many people, produces miracles.

Another bit of good news is that Wanda and I had the pleasure of meeting Judy and Emma yesterday afternoon. Judy was traveling down I-55 through Jackson on her way to Louisiana. As we had traded a couple of phone calls as to where she might spend the night in the area, she let us know when she stopped. As it was only a few miles South of Jackson, we headed out to meet her. Though she wasn’t too impressed with the park she stopped at, she was beaming as she came out of her motorhome. What a delightful lady. We had a short visit, of which I have no proof of as I left my camera in the Casita, and made our way back to Jackson. I guess that means we will have to get together again somewhere. I have to get a photo that shows those amazing, smiling, BLUE eyes.

Best Laid plans of Mice and Men!!

Or as Judy said a few weeks ago; UFF-DAH. We departed Meriwether Lewis Campground in a light rain Wednesday morning with our destination to be Fall Creek Falls State Park. Rain all day and through Wednesday night. Departed there Thursday morning under heavy clouds and rain headed for the Great Smoky Mtn. NP. Look Rock National Park campground on the Foothills Parkway was everything I expected. Views for miles across the mountains, with the clouds breaking up and the sun peeking through. Got all set up on a fantastic site. Dry camping at its best. Half price. No cell, internet, or TV.

Decided we would drive down the mountain to Townsend to get some firewood. While there I turned on my phone to send the kids a text as to where we would be for the next three days. Before I could do that, I got notification of 5 voicemails. Seems the wife's brother back in Mississippi had been stricken ill and was in the hospital in critical condition. Back up the mountain, hook up the trailer, and drive straight through back to Jackson, MS. Good news is he has been through two surgery's and the prognosis is positive. Bad news is that I'm back in Mississippi rather than the mountains. Oh well, There's always next week, hopefully, or the week after................jc

Up the Natchez Trace Parkway

Left Natchez on Sunday afternoon, driving up the Natchez Trace. The parkway follows the old trails and footpaths of the frontiersmen of the early 1800’s. After they floated their goods South to New Orleans, they made their way back upriver to Natchez and then by foot or horseback Northeast toward Nashville and the Ohio River Valley.

Spent Sunday night in Jackson, MS at Lefluers Bluff State Park. A nice park just off the Trace.

Monday morning found us traveling on toward Nashville. After a short drive we arrived at Jeff Busby campground. It is a free, NPS dry camping campground, situated right on the Trace. No hookups of any kind. Just a couple of water faucets and toilets, but it is a really nice place. Was surprised it wasn’t already wrapped up with our Canadian neighbors heading South. Was told it was still a couple of weeks too early.

Tuesday found us again traveling North. Our Destination the Meriwether Lewis campground and memorial site on the Trace in Tennessee.

A beautiful park and campground facility, both managed by the NPS. Again the camping was free. The site was where Meriwether Lewis met his fate while traveling the trace toward Washington DC in 1809. Some say he was murdered, some say he committed suicide, but we will never really know.

Not much left of the original building, just what looks to be the fireplace foundation.

It is sad to think of all the things he went through with Clark on the Westward Expedition, and all the contributions he made to science on that journey, only to meet death at a lonely outpost on the Natchez Trace.

We barely beat the rain. It was beginning to sprinkle as we headed back to the CG. The color is getting better the further we go. Hopefully, if the rain goes away and we get some sunshine, the next few days should be awesome.

Natchez Final Report

Saturday and Sunday seem a blur when I think back on it. It was the most beautiful weekend Natchez has had for ballooning in years. Sunny skies and moderate temperatures made it great to be outside. Up early Saturday morning to get out, and get in the air. That’s what we did Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon, and also Sunday morning.

We flew a few crew members that hadn’t had a chance to fly before now, and just had FUN!

Sunday morning was the best, as we got our son-in-law in the air, along with our grand daughter, for his first flight in the 12 years we’ve been flying in Natchez.. Also the conditions Sunday made for a fun time over the target as they were able to make multiple attempts at scoring.

Overall, it was a great weekend with friends and family. Our shirts for this year say it all!

Up and Away

Friday morning found us on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River North of Natchez. It was a beautiful morning for the hare and hound balloon and bicycle race. The bicyclist rides in the basket with the pilot as he tries to land as close to where the hare balloon touched down as possible. The balloon crew carries the bicycle and tries to to be at the landing location with the bike at the same time. The cyclist then races back to the Natchez Visitor Center, with both the pilot and cyclist awarded points for the least amount of time.

Soon it was liftoff for our balloon.

After a safe landing and getting the biker on his way, it was off to breakfast and on to another school for more show and tell.

You’re correct. Two different envelopes. Same pattern, but different colors and sizes. The larger one for most flights and the smaller one for talks and glowing.

Finished the day with a glow on the riverbank in Vidalia, LA.

Quite a day, and Saturday was yet to come.

On a side note. No I don’t own a balloon, but we have some dear friends who do, and we are privileged to be a part of their hobby. We get together with them a number of times each year. Even made the trip to Albuquerque with them a few years ago. Awesome place for ballooning!

At Natchez each year, we have the parents, children, grandchildren, and friends of four different families participating in a great weekend of fun and fellowship. More pictures another day, maybe…………jc

Natchez Hot Air Balloon Races

Arrived in Natchez Yesterday afternoon to meet our friends from Memphis. After getting everything set up in the campground we headed out to get a bite to eat. Arrived back in the campground just in time to see a full moon rising over the Mississippi river. I know the picture doesn’t do it justice, but hopefully you can appreciate how awesome it was.

The plan for this morning was to do a show and tell at the local Head Start Center and then lift off for a leisurely morning flight. Mother Nature had other plans. Though the winds weren’t too bad at the surface, at 700 ft. they were over 20 miles per hour. Not too good to be up there at that speed.

We wound up doing the show and tell by unloading the basket and burner from the truck and doing a little talk along with a few burns. Too windy even to inflate the envelope. Most seemed to enjoy it, though some were scared of the noise.

The winds are forecast to subside by mid afternoon. Hopefully, we’ll get a flight in later today. If not, we’ll try again tomorrow morning…………….jc

Lots Going On!!

The last post was from the Pine Knot FGRV rally near Crockett, TX. Crockett was named after the famous Tennessee native who died at the battle of the Alamo. Seems he spent the night here on the way to meet his fate.

We had a fine time visiting with friends at the rally. There seemed to be no end to all the fun and fellowship. Also enjoyed walking the campground and seeing many of the different spare tire covers. Just a few examples.

We had a pot luck dinner on Thursday evening. Plenty of food for two rooms full of folks with big appetite's. It's amazing, but there always food to spare.

Following the great dinner there was entertainment. A local band from Lufkin played music from the 50's, 60's, 70's, and beyond, for your listening and dancing pleasure.

As the sun set on another beautiful day, it was time to make preparations for an early departure on Friday morning.

The granddaughter had been elected Homecoming Queen back in Natchez, MS. That meant we had to be in Natchez before kickoff time. Up early on Friday, and on the road by seven. Got there in plenty of time. Lots of stuff going on before the big game.

It was one of the best evenings we have had the privilege of being a part of. We couldn't be more proud!!!!

PineKnot VII Gathering

Crockett Family resort was the site chosen for the seventh year of the Pineknot Gathering. There were quite a number of fiberglass trailers on site, days before the official opening. We arrived Monday around 3 PM.

The park is a fairly nice facility with full hookups and even a nice restaurant on site. The biggest drawback is the dirt and dust brought on by the drought Texas has been experiencing the last year. The lake here is down by 6 feet or so, maybe more.

Definitely not the place you would want to go tearing along in your high speed bass boat. Trolling speed would be more applicable. The whole landscape looks tired, for lack of a better description. All the vegetation is wilted down and there are many examples of dead or dying trees and bush’s everywhere you look.

Dry streambeds and stock ponds are also everywhere.

Hopefully, there will be a wetter Winter than normal for the state of Texas, and the Southwest as a whole, so there can be some replenishment of water. If not, things will only be worse next year. Even Toledo Bend, on the border of Texas and Louisiana looked to be more dry land than water as we crossed it Monday. Kind of scary.

On a happier note, saw the sign today behind a friends trailer that I thought was neat, and also witnessed a nice sunset this afternoon. Later.......jc

Festival Time in the South

October should be called Festival Month in the deep South. It usually has the best weather of the year with clear skies and cooler temperatures. It seems every small town or community has some type of festival during October. We have endured the heat and humidity for months and look forward to enjoying a day outside.

There was one near our home today. They have a BBQ contest along with all the arts and crafts and such. I was asked to help judge the competition, so what could I say? Turn down an opportunity to eat a mess of BBQ free of charge? Not a chance!

I took a stroll around the festival before time to start the judging.

There were lots of things to tickle your fancy. Love all the bright colors.

Lots of arts and crafts, from purses to tatted Christmas ornaments.

Bet you thought I didn’t know what tatting was!

Also, plenty of places to get something to eat.

Caught a couple of folks making preparations for the cookoff.

Then it was time to get down to business. Chicken wings, chicken halves, and pork ribs.

Soon, it was over. No one felt the desire to go out and partake of the festival food.

Elvis showed up in his Cadillac to entertain while the judging forms were tallied up.

Soon it was over. The winners were announced and given their prize money and awards. Sorry that I didn’t get any pictures of the ceremony.

Wanda just asked me what I would like for supper? She has to be kidding. I don’t want to see any food till sometime tomorrow.

A Slow Week

Awoke this morning the the sounds of heavy thunder. We have been wishing for a nice rain since returning from Arkansas last week. The grass needs cutting, but as there’s more bare spots than grass in parts of our yard, it’s nice to have a rain to settle the dust. Received a nice shower, along with some tremendous lightning and thunder. Had Sally hiding under the bed. All gone now, so will spend the rest of the day on the John Deere.

Otherwise, not much happening around the home site. Spent a few hours cleaning the Casita, preparing for getting on the road again. Heading out for the big city of Crockett, TX. Another Casita/FGRV rally. Nearly a hundred rigs registered. Should be a great time together.

We did find out what this little fellow was.

He is destined to become a Spicebush Swallowtail. Isn’t nature amazing?

Thanks to all who have commented on various posts the past few days. Also to those who have chosen to follow us on blogger. My “my blogs” list gets longer and longer with each passing day as I find more fascinating sites to read. Ya’ll keep up the good work.

Arkansas Gold and the Mayan Calendar

While on our way to Ft. Smith we stopped for the night near Conway, Arkansas. Shortly after getting the chairs out to enjoy the view, a young man from a site behind us wandered over and begin to ask about the Casita. It seems most folks have never seen one and have all kinds of questions about it. Does it have a bed? A bathroom? How long can you travel together in there, etc. We usually just ask if they would like to see inside. After a short tour, most walk away surprised, as this young man started to do.

As he was walking away, he turned and asked “do you look for gold?” Surprised by the question, I said no, and also that I didn’t think there was any gold to be found in the state of Arkansas. That’s when it got weird.

He fixed me with a stare, looked over both shoulders to see if anyone else was around, and said: since you don’t know me, and I don’t know you, and we’ll probably never see each other again, I guess I can tell you!

He then started telling this story.

When I was a boy a neighborhood gentleman (old uncle Tom) came by and told my mom that he was going to take me for a ride. I was about 9 or 10 years old at the time. We loaded up in his old pickup truck, bout a 62 or 63 Ford, and took off. He drove for a long time, then turned off the main road and down a narrow logging trail. Eventually we reached a creek and I thought we were going fishing. We got out and began walking. When I asked about fishing poles, he said we didn’t come to fish. Just come on.

We walked upstream for a mile or two and came to a large waterfall. We then climbed up to the top, and there were three creeks coming together to make the one stream over the falls. Uncle Tom said to pay particular attention to which creek we followed as the others dried up after a ways. We took the middle one. Soon, we came to a large cave, of which the stream was pouring out the mouth.

Another look over both shoulders, and a check skyward for the black helicopters.

You know what was in that cave? Buildings, like at that Mesa Verde place. And that’s not all. There was gold laying around on the ground. Lots of it. I picked some up and put it in my pocket. And artifacts; you know, Indian stuff. I picked up some of them, too, and put them in my other pocket. But the most amazing thing was the footprints. Footprints in the rock. Like human footprints, but with 6 toes, and a rear claw.

I smiled and said something to the effect of, you’re kidding, right? Another look around and he continued.

No way! I took my gold and sold it. Got $6.48 for it. Took some of the artifacts over to the University of Central Arkansas. I thought they was going to keep them when I wouldn’t tell them where they came from. They said they had never seen anything like them. And then, when I told them about the footprints and the gold, they went ballistic. They said that I had to tell them in the name of science. They wanted to know who owned the land, but I told them I didn’t know, probably National Forest. They then again told me I had to tell, but I didn’t. Got to get back there and get that gold. Got all the information in my GPS.

I then told him that he should file a claim on the gold and let the researchers in. A find like that could rewrite the history of North America, if not the World. He then said:

I’ll tell them on December 22, 2012. You know, the Mayan calendar says the world ends on December 21, and if it does, it won’t matter. If it doesn’t, then I’ll tell them where to find it. I’ll have all the gold out by then.

Another close look around, high and low, and he walks away. Wanda and I look at each other and say WHAT?

He was, without a doubt, the best bull******* I’ve ever met; or the nuttiest. Maybe he just liked to see peoples reactions to his tales.

So there you have it. If, sometime after December 22, 2012, when the news breaks about a new prehistoric find in Arkansas, you can say that you knew it was coming.

More on River Valley FGRV Rally

Didn’t take many pictures during the rally, itself. It was a more a gathering of friends than an organized rally and everyone seemed to enjoy the informality. We had some light rain on Friday and Saturday, but it didn’t stop folks from visiting around and sharing a little lagniappe.

It “was” a full pot of delicious gumbo. It’s always nice to have someone from South Louisiana around. Especially someone who loves to cook.

One of the things I like about Arkansas is riding the back roads. You never know what you will find. I love all the old towns and crossroad communities with their stone buildings.

You can round a curve and find yourself looking down on a huge river valley.

Or a herd of buffalo, hundreds of miles from Yellowstone.

I don’t even know what to call this little fellow. Showed up on our doorstep, Saturday, during the rain. Thought he looked like a clown. Hope he turns into something beautiful.

Sunday afternoon the thunderheads starting building to the West and around dark they let loose an awesome display of lightning and Thunder. It lasted for a couple of hours, and put a quick stop to all the card playing in the pavilion.

Awoke Monday morning to no electricity due to a transformer being hit by lightning. Decided to hook up and make our way back home for a few days. Pine Knot Rally in two weeks. Egg’ll be rolling again………………jc

Only in Ft. Smith, AR would you find the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center in an old house of prostitution. In fact they not only converted it into their offices, they also created a museum to the working girl.

The downstairs had been remodeled into the way it looked around the year 1900, or so. There were different displays about the girls and the clientele.

The upstairs was a mixture of modern day offices and museum. You must have been special to get your name etched in glass above your door.

River Valley Egg Rally

Arrived in the Ft. Smith, AR area on Tuesday afternoon. A lot of eggs already scattered around Springhill COE campground. Another nice facility with lots of room between sites and W/E for $10.00.
As I was downloading a few pictures I took today, there were a couple left over from Toad Suck. Thought I would post those also.

On to more believable things. Did a tour of the old Ft. Smith this morning. Ft. Smith was at the center of all the different Indian policies in the early 1800's and played a major part in the enforcement of law within the Indian Territories. It was home to the Western most Federal Court at the time and the site of trial and judgement for many individuals

It was presided over by Judge Isaac Parker. Known as the "hanging judge" he heard over 13,000 cases and sentenced 160 to death by hanging. Below is a shot of his courtroom and a replica of the gallows where the most violent criminals met their fate.

There was also a replica of the jail in the exact location, and different displays about the deputies which risked life and limb traveling in the Indian territory to arrest the criminals.

Back at the RVER, there was a catered dinner tonight which was well attended. Lots of visiting with old and new friends. Looking forward to more tomorrow.

Toad Suck, Arkansas

The evening finds us at Toad Suck Campground on the Arkansas river, near Conway, Arkansas. A very nice COE facility.

The story goes that back in the days of steamboats on the river, the boats would have to tie up here to wait for higher water to proceed on upriver. There was of a course a tavern nearby, and it’s said that the crews would “suck on the bottles till they swelled up like toads”.

Since that time the name has been used for a ferry, tavern, settlement, community, and finally, a lock and dam on the river.

We watched towboats passing through the locks and had a very nice evening. A good place to spend the night. S10.00 water and Electric……………..jc

Egg's rollin' again!

Moved the Casita nearer the back door today. It's going to be rolling again Monday morning if all goes as planned. The River Valley Egg Rally kicks off on Thursday just outside of Ft. Smith, AR. We plan to arrive Tuesday and do some serious visiting with old friends before the official start. Looking forward to meeting some new folks also. We haven't been to the Ft. Smith area before and are really looking forward to it.

A few more notes on last weekends trip. As tropical storm Lee was flexing her muscles on Monday morning, I drove into the town of Port Gibson, MS

Port Gibson's greatest claim to fame is reported to be that General Grant, on his march to Vicksburg to win control of the Mississippi River, spared the town because it was "too beautiful to burn." Not sure if that is true or not, but the view of Church Street will make it seem possible. There are eight churches within three blocks, interspersed with majestic homes from the past.

The most famous of the churches is the First Presbyterian Church. Known throughout the South for the gilded hand pointing toward Heaven.

The church is filled with beautiful stained glass windows and three of the the chandeliers came from the steamboat Robert E. Lee. They were salvaged from the boat after a fire destroyed it near Port Gibson in 1882.

Another unique example is the Jewish Synagogue, Temple Gemiluth Chessed. Built in 1891, it speaks of the diverse population of the area at the time. I liked the front entrance.

With the other six churches nearby, along with others scattered throughout the town, I think it would be safe to say that Port Gibson was settled by People of Faith. To have all the fascinating structures in such a small town testifies to that.

Cemetery

There is an old cemetery on the bluffs above Grand Gulf. It is the final resting place for many of the townspeople of the time.

Many of the family plots are showing their age. Trees have sprouted, grown to maturity, died, and collapsed; all since the last burial took place here.

There were many examples of extraordinary wrought-iron craftsmanship on display. Though some of the plots showed the signs of vandalism or theft, there were still many looking as they did 150 years ago.

I wonder if the broken branch had some special significance. There was one on each side of the gate.

Most of the individual tombstones had a story. There was one which showed the deceased died during a steamboat explosion. Another said “He was murdered on the Mississippi River by a black man from Louisiana”. One was for two brothers who died shortly after returning from California by way of the Pacific Ocean. Many showed their home country being Scotland. Wonder if their loved ones back home ever knew what happened to them?

There was also the largest lichen(?) I have ever seen. It was growing on a root of a very old oak tree. Thought it deserved a picture, too.

Grand Gulf

After being out of touch for nearly a week, it is good to have internet access again. We left home last Thursday, along with another couple, to visit Grand Gulf State Military Park Near Port Gibson, Mississippi. Located in the kudsu covered hills of Southwest Mississippi, Grand Gulf was a major Mississippi river port during the first half of the 18'th century. It also played a major role before the battle of Vicksburg during the Civil War. The land was donated to the state during the 1960’s and the park was created to honor the memory of the town, and also the men who fought and died here over 148 years ago.There is a museum with a lot of information about the town of Grand Gulf, along with many other unusual items.

There was even a mastodon bone which was found in the area that had markings from the tools used to butcher the animal thousands of years ago.

Grand Gulf got its name from a huge whirlpool in the Mississippi River just North of the town site. It became a major river port for a few short years before the river changed course and whittled away most of the town shortly before the Civil War. By the time the war began, there was nothing left but a few abandoned buildings.

There were many other unusual items such as an old cotton press, a Civil War ambulance, a moonshine still, and even a submarine.

“Dog Trot” house from the 1700’s and a Catholic Church from the ghost town of Rodney, MS.

It is a very interesting place off the beaten path, but a jewel if you are interested in American history. It is fascinating to me to study the ways of those who came before us and to try and understand the lives they lived. Those folks who lived and died in Grand Gulf, Mississippi in 1835 probably thought they had it as good as it could get. Little did they know that a few short years later there would be nothing left but memories and tombstones. More to come on the area later this week.

After returning home from Pensacola, we received a call from friends camping at a nearby state park. They invited us out for breakfast so what could we say. It took us most of an hour to get ready and out to the park. We arrived to sausage and eggs on the griddle.

There were young folks, and some not so young.

Critters to tease with a piece of toast, and music.

After dining on eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, biscuits, fruit, and other fine southern cuisine, it was time for the music to begin. We had a guitar player and a hammered dulcimer player.

Between the two, we were entertained for an hour or so. They played and sang country, gospel, and old mountain music.

They even inspired an old dog to try and learn a few new tricks. I think he’ll be joining the jam session next time.

Good friends getting together at a moments notice and having a great time. We find joy and laughter in ourselves and each other, and that’s what life should be about.

Fort Pickens (Part 2)

About the time of the Spanish-American war in 1898, Fort Pickens began a modernization effort. The old smooth bore cannons were upgraded with rifled inserts or replaced with totally new rifled guns. A new gun battery called Battery Pensacola was constructed on the parade ground of the old fort.

This gun battery, along with other batteries outside of the fort, was constructed of reinforced concrete. They were equipped with the latest fire power of the era.

These guns were able to duck and hide behind the bulkheads while being reloaded and aimed. There were two spotters for each battery which took compass headings to the target and then relayed that information to the gun crew. The crew then translated that into an aiming point by using a triangulation process. You can imagine all that went on as levers were pulled and wheels spun to set up each shot before the gun was kicked up over the bulkhead and fired, all to be repeated as the target moved and new data was received from the spotters.

There were also batteries that contained mortars. This one, called Battery Worth, held eight 12 inch mortars, capable of launching 700 pound shells up to nine miles.

It only got bigger from there. Battery Langdon had 12 inch guns, that when fired caused a shock wave to travel through the sand of the island, and the concussion was said to have caused bleeding of the ears and mouth of the crew.

A mix of these different batteries were used through world war II. All were officially retired in 1947. As the newer technologies such as radar, better aircraft, and a modern Navy emerged from the war, there was no need for fixed defensive positions. After 113 years of service to our country the area is now part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore.

Fort Pickens (Part 1)

On the Western tip of Santa Rosa Island sits the remains of Fort Pickens. In the early 1800’s, homeland security was a priority of the military. As the Nation still feared invasion from other foreign countries, we constructed a number of forts to guard our harbors and shipyards. Fort Pickens was the largest of four built to defend Pensacola and its Navy yard.

The fort was constructed from 1829-1834, using skilled slave labor. The fort contains more than 21 million bricks, most of which were also made locally by slaves.

Fort Pickens was designed to have over 200 guns. Not sure if it was ever fully armed but there were plenty of signs of where a number of them had been. The lower level of the fort consisted of brick arch’s. Each one of the arch’s, or casements, contained a cannon of some sort. The semicircles in the brick floor were made of granite to support the wheels of the carriage on the cannon as they were rotated.

The only time the guns were fired on an enemy force was during the Civil War. Fort Pickens remained under Union control and shots were exchanged with Confederates on the mainland in the early months of the war. The commander of the Confederate force at the time happened to be the same gentleman that was in charge of construction of Fort Pickens 30+ years earlier.

The fort was designed with quarters for enlisted and officers. There were powder magazines for black powder, and bastions on the corners that allowed the firing of the guns down along the walls. Cisterns were built into the outer walls to collect rain water for drinking. How would you like to drink water stored here?

The brickwork was amazing in its form and also its function. There were arch’s within arch’s to better distribute the weight of the structure. That something this large could be constructed upon a sand spit and still be in around nearly 200 years later is a testament to those that built it.

There is a large gap in the wall of the fort where the Northwest bastion used to be. A powder magazine located beneath the bastion containing 8000 lb.s of black powder exploded in 1899, totally destroying that part of the fort and hurling debris for miles.

As you walk the brick floors and climb the steps that show the wear of thousands of feet, it’s easy to let your mind wander back.

You think of those who struggled here during the construction. You think of those that served here, as well as those imprisoned such as the Apache Indians and their warrior leader Geronimo, during the Indian wars. Never in their wildest dreams or imagination could they fathom that one day in the future, a guy would be walking around taking photo’s of this old fort near its 178th birthday. Bet they also never dreamed of anything like this screaming through the skies over the fort at 600 MPH!!......jc

Pensacola NAS

Made a little trip back to the mainland to visit this museum. Had heard a lot about it through the years and it stood up to its reputation.

There were planes of all kinds. The majority of which, I didn't have a clue even existed. Beginning with a model of what had to be one of the earliest airplanes, to examples of our space program, the museum covered it all

There were many planes from the biginnings of Naval Aviation.

All equipped with the latest electronics of the time.

Hanging from the ceilings and all over the floor, there were so many examples that it seemed impossible to see them all.

One of the last F-14 Tomcat fighters. The plane made famous by the movie Top Gun. All have been retired from duty and replaced with more modern fighters.

There was so much that I didn't get pictures of. There was an example of a Vietnam War POW camp. A fantastic display of how things were in WWII, both overseas and on the homefront. Airships and

aircraft carriers, space craft and fighter planes. If you ever find Yourself in the Pensacola area be sure and make the museum a stop. You won't regret it....................................................................................

Fort Pickens, Florida

Arrived at the Ft. Pickens section of the Gulf Islands National Seashore on Monday afternoon to a cool (relatively speaking) breeze and a nice campsite. We are in site 40 which has some shade. There were signs of Hurricane Ivan all around, even though I think it has been seven years or so since it hit this area.

After getting everything squared away in the campground we took a short walk over to the Gulf. The water was clear and clean as usual, and the beach was beautiful with hardly anyone around.

Even though we are across the bay from the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, you have to imagine our surprise on Tuesday morning to hear the National Anthem being played at 8 AM. It carries across the water very well and we heard it again this morning. Another surprise this morning were these guys.

The Blue Angels were apparently doing a little practice this morning and they were flying all around the campground. It was hard to get decent pictures with my camera as by the time I found them in the viewfinder and got focused, they were GONE. Really enjoyed the show. Hopefully, they will be doing it again tomorrow. That’s all for today. Will post more later in the week. Pretty sunset tonight.....jc

The road’s calling my name!

Everything is back together on the Casita. All new running gear, including brakes, bearings, and hubs. Made one of my famous “BEEN THINKING” remarks to Wanda the other afternoon about maybe we should take a little trip to check everything out. She surprised me by saying “sounded good to her”. Then began the conversation as to where we would go. It is still hot as blue blazes down here, and that includes everywhere within a thousand miles or so. The nearest cool temperatures appear to be the mountains of New Mexico, and we aren’t prepared to travel that far at this time.

After kicking the idea around for a few days, we have decided to head down to the Gulf Coast near Pensacola, FL. I’ve made reservations at a Gulf Islands National Seashore campground for 4 nights next week. We’ll be at Ft. Pickens campground on Santa Rosa Island. A quarter mile from the Gulfs emerald green waters for 10 bucks a night with water and electric. Pretty good deal.

I’m sure it will still be hot, but with the beach close by, we should have a nice breeze blowing. The forecast is for highs around 90. That beats the highs of 97-99 which are forecast for the home front next week.

Sally says she can’t wait to hit the road again…….

Dog Days of August

Things have been slow around the Eggrollings household the past week. After getting the Egg home last Tuesday, I set about trying to figure out what caused the wheel failure. After consulting with a number of folks brighter than I am, the consensus is "ME". Apparently, I followed directions too well, and not being a mechanic, didn't know any better. When I replaced the hubs and bearings last Fall, I left the spindle nut too tight against the bearings. This led to the wearing of a groove in the D-washer and ultimately the failure of the bearing.

A replacement hub has been ordered, as well as bearings for both sides. Hopefully, I'll do a better job this time. As I said earlier, just thankful they failed close to home, rather than 4000 miles away.
The "Dog Days" of Summer are apparently here. Sally pretty much refuses to get out of the house between dawn and dusk.

The heat index is forecast to be 108-110 for the next few days. Some good friends departed yesterday for a couple of weeks in the Ozarks. Hopefully, the will find it a little cooler than here.
This time last year, we were getting underway for the Great Lakes area. Sure wish we were headed that way again this week. It has to be cooler up there. A few pictures of the Mackinac, MI area.

Had a wonderful weekend in Monroe, visiting friends and watching some softball.
Sad to say, I didn't get any pictures of our great campground. We were surprised when we arrived to see another Casita had checked in. Patti, from Morgan City, had come up for a visit. We had a gatherin' going on. Add to that friends from Memphis showing up, and it was a great weekend of visiting and softball.
Our campground hostess was the best ever. She put on a shrimp boil that was second to none. Didn't get any pictures of that, either. Too busy eating. Thanks GJ.

The tournament was the Southwest Regional for Big League Softball. There were 2 teams from Texas, 1 from Arkansas, and 2 from Louisiana. The winner goes on to Kalamazoo, MI to play in the Big League Softball World Series.

Our girls started out Friday night defeating Arkansas. From there they went on to play an amazing Texas team on Saturday night. Unfortunately, they lost that one and found themselves playing Arkansas again Sunday afternoon.

They once again defeated Arkansas, and were to play again later Sunday evening, but were rained out. They finally finished playing today(Tuesday) and were eliminated from the tourney. Final game this evening, but my money is on the Texas team that defeated them Saturday to be packing for Michigan.

As there was rain in the forcast for all of Monday, we loaded up and headed home. Stopped for gasoline approximately 30 miles from home and noticed this.

Luckily we knew someone nearby where we could park the trailer. The Casita received all new running gear last Fall and has been approximately ten thousand miles since. Not sure what caused the bearing to fail, but luckily I caught it before the tire ran off. Thankfully, it didn't fail while we were out West.
Went back this morning and was able to get everything off without too much trouble.

I was able to get some new bearings locally. Put everything back together and brought it on home. Will probably order all new hubs, bearings, and brakes for both sides. Next trip is scheduled for first of September. Gotta get rollin'..................jc

HOT!!!!!!

It has been really hot here in the Deep South. If possible, you get out early and do what work you have to. Then it's back inside, under the air conditioning until late afternoon. Those that don't have that option just have to tough it out. I can remember the days when I didn't have a choice. Climbing poles, stringing wire, placing cable, all in the Summer heat. Our trucks didn't even have air conditioning. I just don't remember how hot it had to be. Maybe it had something to do with youth.

No, that's not the wife and I in our earlier years. I do wish I had that hair, though!
It's that with the heat and all, sitting in the house trying to keep cool, your mind wanders. You start to think of places you have visited, and the things you have seen. You remember cool rivers, ice cold lakes, and even breezy ice fields.

You remember good times with great friends.

You remember the places that leave a lump in your throat, and you wish you had millions of dollars to share.

But best of all, you remember the good times, and tend to forget the bad. You remember the smiles and laughter of family and friends. You remember that something, or someone, was way more awesome than you thought.

There's something to be said for hot Summer days, after all..........jc

Roadtrip!

O K! So it's not loading up and heading out for a month or more. It is getting back out on the road for a few days. The grand daughter is playing softball in Monroe, Louisiana next weekend.

We met this lady on the Utah Tour last year. She had just started traveling with her Casita, and we became really good friends because of a cup of coffee. I'll tell that story one day.

She has since traveled all over this Country. She went from someone that didn't know anything about pulling a trailer, to one that is very comfortable hooking up and hitting the road to most anywhere.

You're probably asking yourself what this has to do with a softball tournament. Well, you see, she lives in Monroe and has a spot for us to park the Casita.

So, the wheels will be turning again Friday. We'll watch a little softball, eat some good food, and do a lot of what we Southern'ers do best. JUST VISITIN' !!!!

Can't believe our blog has been added to the HitchItch website. I am honored beyond words. Not really, but to think I'm there with the Bayfield Bunch, Diana's Life on the Open Road, Mike&Pat, Brian's Going RV Boondocking, and so many more is an honor. There are so many fantastic writers on the site, and I spend a number of hours each week reading their posts.

I had started to name todays post "I've been thinking".

These are the three words that always strike fear in my wife's heart. As soon as I say those words she rolls her eyes, leans her head back and says “what now”?

She knows that I am about to start planning another journey(s).

It's not that she is against these trips. It's that she can never plan for just one.
I'll start out with one and while working on the plans for it, discover something that might be more interesting if we go another direction. There are just so many fascinating places, and things to see, in our wonderful country. It is so hard to pass them by.

About the time she has her schedule arranged of when and where, that's when I tend to drop the bombshell.

Thankfully, after a few questions about why this and why that, she gets on board and away we go. That's when she might again, hear; Ive been thinkin'!!

Salmon

One of our stops along the Northern California coast was at Camp Klamath RV park on the Klamath River. We were there on a Saturday night when they put on a salmon feast. More details were posted “here” . The local Indian tribe has special fishing rights and they sell some of their catch. The fish we ate on Saturday were swimming the day before. This was, without a doubt, the best salmon we had ever eaten.

As we were departing on the Monday afterward, I asked if I could purchase some salmon like they had prepared for us. The answer was yes. As we have a small freezer in the Casita, I purchased only two packages. One was consumed a few days later, but the other package made it all the way back home.

We prepared that package last night. Though the temperature was in the low nineties, and there weren't any redwoods or rolling river nearby, it was still great. We did have black bears in the woods, along with a grizzly in the front yard, and they added some ambiance.

Klamath River salmon, Oregon beer, and Mississippi heat. A pretty good combination, overall.

Status Report

It has been a week since we returned home. Finally getting accustomed to the heat and humidity, again.
Have most of the grass cut and all the fallen limbs picked up. We have approximately 50 pine trees in our front yard and they can create quite a mess over time. They are constantly shedding dead limbs, especially after a rain.
We've also had some severe thunderstorms the last few afternoons. Lightening struck a pine tree just across our fence on the neighbors property. Too close for comfort.
Since arriving home, we have been asked numerous times what the favorite memory was of our journey. It is too hard to pick one. Hopefully, all future trips will be as good.

The Casita has been cleaned up both inside and out, and all the linens, dry goods, etc, have been restocked and put back in place. Time to start thinking about the next trip. Sue and Moe of The Moho began their journey to Alaska yesterday, and I'll be following their blog very closely. Though it is in the very early planning stage, Alaska is the tentative destination for Summer, 2012. As for the rest of this year, The Northeast is an option for September, maybe.
We know we will be on the go all the month of October. The Pine Knot Rally in Texas, the Natchez Balloon Race's, and the Arkansas Balloon Weekend take care of that month's planning.
Bottom line is that the Egg has to roll pretty often. Can't let those tires get a flat spot on them from sitting too long.

Final Tally

Have spent the last few days getting things back to normal around the house. It has been really hot and humid since we got home, so the outside chores must be done either early or late. The middle of each day has been spent inside under the AC. Did manage to smoke a couple of pork butts today for the neighborhood 4th of July get together.
Also got around to finalizing our expenses from the trip. We spent 47 nights in 27 different campsites. All were either National/State Parks, NFS/BLM/COE, or commercial parks. The lowest fee we paid was $5.00 for a NFS campground in Wyoming, and the highest was $42.00 at a commercial park in Long Beach, Washington. We spent a total of $926.00 on campsites for the trip. I'm sure we could have spent a lot less by moving inland away from the coast through Northern California, Oregon, and Washington, but we wanted to drive and stay along the coast, and that's what we did.
As for gasoline, we spent $2,128.00 for a journey of 8102 miles. I averaged a little over 14.3 mpg for the entire trip. I didn't try and keep up with the difference between when we were towing the Casita, and just riding around. Too much trouble to try and keep separate, as far as I'm concerned. The highest price we paid for gasoline was in Klamath, CA at $4.29 a gallon. The lowest we paid was last Thursday morning in Olive Branch, MS at $3.35 a gallon.
I won't include what we spent on groceries, souvenirs, eating out, etc; because every one's will be different.
Ever since we purchased our trailer nearly 5 years ago, I have plugged in place marks on Goggle Earth at the place's we have camped. After putting in the ones from this journey, I counted them up. From August, 2006 until now, we have camped in 105 different locations in the US and Canada. Quite a number of them, more than once. My goal is to expand that to at least 250 in the next five years.

Arrived home yesterday afternoon about 2PM. Wow, did the heat and humidity hit with a vengeance. We started the job of unloading the Casita and truck. Finished with that around 4 and crashed. One of our neighbors had seen us drive in and provided us with some fresh homegrown tomatoes. Wanda fried up a little bacon and we forgot about the heat for a little while.
A fresh loaf of bread, some Blue Plate mayonaise, salt, pepper, fresh tomatoes, and bacon. It doesn't get any better than that. Especially, the first bacon/tomato sandwich of the year.
Had breakfast with friends in town this morning and then tackled the Casita again. Got it all washed up and and ready to go back under the shed for a few weeks. Next planned outing is middle of September, but I don't know if I can make it that long without a short trip somewhere.
I have friends and acquaintance's ask; why do I like to travel so much? Or, why don't you just enjoy staying home? I don't have a definitive answer. I think it has something to do with "getting away".
I get tired of the news, the politics, the problems, both local and national, that we are hammered with daily at home.
I'm not so naive as to think that other parts of the country don't experience the same things. It is just that when you travel, you are mostly going places that are tourist related. You experience the best a place has to offer, and don't often hear about, or have to deal with, the more negative things. The people you interact with seem to enjoy the fact that you are there. The grocery, fast food place, fine dining restaurant, campground or rv park, whatever; they all seem happy to see you.
Though we carry a TV with us, we watch it very little, and we don't read newspapers. We do pick up bits of news on the internet and such, but we're mostly in the dark about what's going on, and we like it that way.
I guess you could say we find our "perfect world" while traveling. In out latest journey, we had not one bad experience. From a young lady in an Oregon State Park who went out of her way to find us the perfect campsite, to walking in a McDonalds in Green River, WY and see nothing but teenagers behind the counter like the old days, it is as close to what we would like the world to be, as we will ever find.
