"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime"-MARK TWAIN

Moving South by East

We moved a hundred miles or so south on Sunday.  Decided to make Orchard Beach our destination for the next two evenings based on the availability of Passport America parks.  We picked out wild Acres based on RV Park Reviews website.

Nothing wrong with the place other than it’s more a mobile home park than an RV park.

Most sites held a park model mobile home or permanent RV of some kind.  Very few actual travelers in for a short time.

While walking Sally this morning I came upon this in the middle of the park, with trailer sites all around it.

The stone walls were constructed of blocks nearly twenty feet long and a foot thick.  I first thought it was an old home foundation, but quickly realized it was an ancient cemetery. All the markers were covered with moss and dirt.

Behind it was another fenced in area.

The tall monument tells the history of the family buried here.  Hard to read.

Kind of sad to find this piece of history from the 1740’s surrounded by travel trailers and mobile homes.

Later this morning we traveled the fifteen miles or so down to Kennebunkport.

The bird was pointing the way to the Bush compound from atop a local church.

Appeared no one was home.

From there, we traveled down to Portsmouth, New Hampshire.  More on that tomorrow..jc

A Southern Reunion

On Friday, we decided to drive down the less traveled side of the island to Bass Harbor.  I wanted to see the Bass Harbor lighthouse.  The road followed the shoreline most of the way down, but was just far enough away to prevent easy viewing.

Just before we arrived at Bass Harbor, Wanda commented that the vehicle in front of us had a Mississippi license plate.  They also turned into the lighthouse parking area.

As we were getting out of the truck we heard a voice say; look, somebody else from Mississippi.  To our surprise, it wasn’t the couple in the car we had followed in, but another couple standing in the parking area.

Soon, all three couples; one from the town of Indianola, in the Delta; one from the Hattiesburg area, and Wanda and I, were in deep conversation right in the middle of the parking lot.  Dodging cars, talking like long lost friends, though our only connection was to be Mississippians, in Maine.

Soon, we realized we had common friendships amongst us.  Wanda used to work with the best friend of the lady from Hattiesburg.  We are good friends with a couple in our area, that worked for the same newspaper as the man from Indianola.  And, on and on.

We spent nearly an hour talking like long lost friends.  I think that could only happen with folks from the South.

As for the lighthouse, it was pretty neat, but hard to get a picture of.  This is the best I could do.

From there we had a shore lunch,

and I provided supper.

Fresh lobster, from a roadside stand.  You pick them out, and they are boiled in sea water while you wait.  We had three prepared, and ate them on our table at the campground, along with some homemade lobster stew……jc

Acadia/Coastal Maine

DSC_1787 (Medium)

Acadia National park is scattered over many different parts of Mt. Desert Island.  Far vistas from the top of Cadillac mountain are tough to photograph.

And getting the correct timing for Thunder Hole is also tough.

The loop road carries you past many nice places for pictures of the rocky shore.

We took a day trip across the border to New Brunswick, and Campobello Island.  Visited the island home of FDR.  Another cloudy day which makes for washed out pictures.

Most everything in the home is family heirlooms and several docents do a great job of bringing the home alive.

While Wanda was waiting to have tea with Eleanor,

I visited Head Harbor Lighthouse on the end of the island.

After returning to the mainland and the U S, we stopped at West Quaddy Head lighthouse.  Located on the easternmost point of the United States.
