"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime"-MARK TWAIN

The Road Home.

We departed Schoodic woods on Sunday morning, July 27th. Our destination that night was once again Dolly Copp nfs campground near Gorham, NH. It was time for an oil change, and I was familiar with a reputable shop in Gorham. We were there a couple of years ago and had tire and front end issues with the truck. They treated me well.

After the oil change first thing Monday morning we were on the road again by 10 AM. Destination for Monday night was a Harvest Host in Ballston Spa, NY. Lots of narrow two lane New York highways.

Tuesday found us at Ive's Run CoE Campground in north central Pennsylvania. We did two nights there, enjoying a rest and local ice cream two days in a row.

Thursday night found us at another CoE campground in Burnsville, West Virginia.

Friday and Saturday nights were near Somerset, KY in another Corp park. Sunday night was Cloudland Canyon SP near Chattanooga.  Monday afternoon about 2PM we rolled down our driveway. 71 days on the road, 70 nights sleeping in the Casita. Second best trip we've done, only surpassed by Alaska.

Schoodic Point(Acadia National Park)

When one thinks of Acadia National Park they think of Bar Harbor, Blackwoods campground, Thunder Hole, and Cadillac Mountain. We've been there once, done that, back before our parks became crazy. Had no desire to do it again nowadays.

Much like the Grand Canyon has(had) the North Rim, and Bryce Canyon has Red Canyon, Acadia has its quieter side. Totally removed Geographically from the Bar Harbor part of Acadia is Schoodic Point. Consisting of a nice campground, a scenic drive, bike trails, and beautiful coastal views. We spent six nights there enjoying the scenery, food, and the biking.

The area was low key, small town, and a wonderful location just to unwind after being on the go for eight weeks. We actually met a couple from near our home who were winding down their own two month roadtrip. We chatted most evenings, comparing notes of the days activities.

Coming up, the road home...jc

Campobello

After only one night back in the USA, we headed back to Canada. It was only a mile or so from the campground to the crossing over to Campobello Island. Back in New Brunswick. Campobello Island was a childhood playground of FDR, and he maintained the Summer home there for his family throughout his life.  The island had many Summer homes of the wealthy from New York. Most aged out, rotted down, burned, etc; but three examples still exist within the national park.

Roosevelt's.

A family friend's next door.

And finally, a small home across the road.

It was here that we had tea with Eleanor.   Tea and crumpets(actually homemade ginger snaps from Eleanor's recipe) while listening to Eleanor's life story from some very good docents. We sat at tables for four, sipping tea from historical cups and saucers. Every place setting was different.

Eleanor was quite a lady who didn't come into her own until after FDR'S death. I should have taken more pictures, but just didn't.  I would highly recommend visiting Campobello Island if in the area, and definitely have tea with Eleanor.  The border crossing back to the US was another non-event.

On to Acadia NP...jc

Last days in Canada

We departed Cape Breton on a Tuesday morning, headed for Amherst Shores provincial park. Our least favorite stop of the entire trip. A wooded campground about a mile from a muddy beach. Nothing much else worth visiting in the area. Just a stop about halfway back to the border.

After three nights we decided to leave a day early and stop at another Harvest Host. A rum distillery in the town of Sussex. A really nice overnight stop.

The following morning was the day of our border crossing. We made our last visit to Tim Hortons. Really miss that place.

On our first evening in Canada we were in St George, NB. We visited a local eatery named the Pub on Main, and we all three had fish n chips. They were absolutely delicious. We probably ate fish n chips over a dozen times afterwards, and always compared them to the Pub on Main. None measured up, and we begin to wonder if they tasted so good just because of the excitement of starting our real journey. We made a plan to stop there for lunch before crossing back into the USA. We did just that with all three of us ordering fish n chips. They were just as good. Absolutely the best of the trip.

From the Pub, it was to the border crossing.  A non-event, actually.  A nice lady asked a few questions,  we answered,  and were welcomed back home. We drove another twenty five or so miles to the village of Lubec, Maine. Two nights there in an old school rv park.

Campobello Island next...jc
