The Cold Road

As we left home last Thursday, the 28th, little did we know what lay ahead.  It was a cool dreary day as we pulled from our driveway around noon.  We had a plan for stopping at Sandy Creek CoE for the night, then Crane’s Mill CoE park near San Antonio for the holiday weekend.  The immediate forecast called for clearing skies and warmer temps.  As we were driving West the temperature hovered around the 40 degree mark, and it was still cold  when we arrived at Sandy Creek.

The next morning dawned just as dreary as the day before.  We hadn’t unhooked the trailer, so we were back on the road by 8 AM.  We stopped at a Sonic in Livingston for a breakfast sandwich, all the while scaning the sky for the promised sunshine.  It was not to be.  All the way to Cranes Mill Park it was cloudy, windy, and cold.

We were surprised as we entered the campground loop.  Wanda excitedly asked if the couple walking their dog weren’t friends of ours.  Sure enough,  Pam and Jackie are building a new home in nearby New Braunfels, and were staying in the campground for a few days.  We had quite the reunion.  It has been over a year since we had seen them, so we had lots of stories to share.

We unhitched the trailer, set up the Clam with the firepit, and were in business.  Thouigh it was still cold and blustery outside, we had a nice warm place to visit with our friends.

Saturday morning was a repeat of the past few days.  We made a grocery run to HEB, and by the time we returned to the campground the sun had made its appearance.  Soon we were shedding jackets and vests for just a sleeve.  What a joy it was to finally bask in its warmth.

We knew we had to enjoy it while we could.  The forecast for most of the country was for extreme cold, and San Antonio was no exception.  The temperatures fell all through the day Sunday, and a cold wind made being outside a chore.  So what does one do rather than sit in the trailer watching TV?  Go eat, of course.

Texas BBQ with friends from the area.  No picture with all the food, but as you can see, everyone was happy afterward.

Monday was a day of snoozing, football games, and staying inside.  The temperature never got above freezing and the wind was gusting to 25 mph.  We had plans to hit the road early on Tuesday.  As we watched the weather, we realized that we would be towing in below freezing temperatures all day.  Not wanting to risk freezing pipes, and arriving at our next destination in a “cold” trailer, we weighed our options and decided to stay another day.

So, what to do today?  How about going out to eat, again.  We made arrangements to meet Pam and Jack at one of their favorite lunch spots.  We spent better than two hours enjoying lunch and our friends company.

As I type this, the news is warning of ice and freezing rain just North of us.  They say it will be gone in a few hours.  The low tonight will be 19 and the high tomorrow will be 52, and sunny.  I hope that’s so…..jc

OBTW!  How about them Dawgs, and the Crimson Tide?  An SEC champion, regardless of the outcome……jc
