Flint Hills Architecture

Another thing I find fascinating about rural Kansas is the architecture from the late 1800’s.  A beautiful example is the county courthouse in Cottonwood Falls, just South of the  Tallgrass Prarie Preserve.  Built in 1873.

Sure wish that telephone cable wasn’t in the picture.  An awesome building constructed of native limestone.

We also noticed this small building standing on a hill just North of the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve.

The Lower Fox Creek school.  Built in 1882, of the same native limestone.

Things inside still appear as they would have around 1920, or so.

No sparing the rod, and spoiling the child, here.

There were lots of things to see along the Flint Hills Scenic Byway.  We would love to have had more time to explore some of the backroads, maybe find some of the wild mustangs, and experiencing one of the beautiful sunsets of the area.  But, we were scheduled for bad weather Sunday afternoon and night, so we returned to the campground and packed most things away.  A lot of rain, wind, and hail throughout the night, but no damage to anyone or anything come daylight.  We moved sixty miles North to Milford Lake COE campground on Monday.  Had a nice sunset to remind us “life is good”

  1. Really wanted to check out KS more....especially Flint. Cross fingers for every storm....lots of rain our way but finally allowed us to have the windows open....what a blessing. Got a plan through LA to TX....might be in touch.

  3. Hello from Arkansas City... South of you. That courthouse is the oldest working courthouse west of the Mississippi River! Thought you might like to know.
