"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime"-MARK TWAIN

Heron Lake

We enjoyed most of a week at Heron Lake State Park near Chama, New Mexico.  No agenda meant I took time for reading and relaxing, while Wanda enjoyed one of her favorite past times.  She averages one every couple of days, using the stove cover to carry it between inside and out.

The lake itself is still in pitiful shape.  Deer graze on what was once lake bottom.

The boat ramp is closed as it ends in a shallow mud hole.

These boats have been in storage for years.  So long that they have been abandoned by their owners according to one of the park volunteers.  The state refuses to release them until storage fees are paid, and the fees by now are more than the owners will pay.

One day we decided to take a ride up into the mountains between Chama and Antonito, CO.  We found ourselves leaving town the same time as the train.  I managed to get a few good shots as it made its way up to Cumbres Pass.
