"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime"-MARK TWAIN

Salvation Mountain.

Two posts today. trying to catch up.

Located just as one enters Slab City, near Niland, California; you will pass Salvation Mountain.  Not much I can say that the pictures don’t cover.  Just read this story of the how and why, then look at the pictures.  Straight from my little point and shoot.  No manipulation.  You can find much more information on how he built the mountain on Google or Wikipedia.

The Desert Bar

We departed Kofa NWR on Saturday morning, heading for a RV park in Ehrenburg, AZ.  Located on the Colorado River near I-10, it fit the bill for a place to dump, refill, and watch the Super Bowl.  How about that game?

Sure hated leaving one of our favorite places of all time.

While in Ehrenburg, and waiting on the game, we decided to make a drive up to Parker, AZ and visit an Arizona landmark.  The Desert Bar, or Nellie E saloon, is located at the end of a five mile, rocky, dirt road

IMG_3680 (Medium)

Open only during the Winter months, two days a week, noon till 6 PM.

Quite a place.

There was a band playing great music.

Everything powered entirely by solar, with propane for cooking.  Food wasn’t cheap, but what is in the desert?

Yuma Proving Grounds

IMG_3625 (Medium)

Have you ever wondered where all the stuff used by our military gets its credentials, so to speak.  Well, much of it was tested, and given a grade at the Yuma Proving Grounds.  Started as a desert training center during WWII, it matured into place with more scientists than soldiers.  Patton was here, and left his mark.

A group of the Greatest Generation, during their training here.

He even had a “red” telephone.

IMG_3607 (Medium)

They tested all types of things, from tires to ammunitions.

Lots of fancy devices used for gathering the information.

The Moon Rover prototypes were tested here.

I found the most fascinating vehicle to be this.

           IMG_3642 (Medium)

Tires almost 12 feet tall and 3 feet wide.

I would have loved playing in the desert with it.

Another favorite.

A very informative museum to our military scientists and engineers.  They don’t get much thought in everyday life, but without their testing and development procedures, our military forces would be handicapped in a big way……jc
